Biography

Dr. Derek Chen is the Sr. Director of Biologics Discovery Department of ProBio. After obtaining his doctorate in immunology from the University of Massachusetts School of medicine, he joined GenScript in 2015 and has been responsible for antibody drug discovery platform for the past seven years. He has more than 200 project experience in antibody drug discovery and Engineering innovation optimization, as well as three patents related to biopharmaceutical discovery.

Topic Background

As of 2023, more than 100 Ab drugs have been approved by FDA, most of them were generated by hybridoma and phage library. However, as a newly emerged technology, single B cell approach contributed 20% of approved drug during the last four years. Comparing to traditional technology, single B cell screening featured with shorter timeline, better diversity and better developability due to cognate pairing of Ab heavy & light chain, but limited screening sensitivity and assay flexibility has been the major bottleneck preventing its further expansion to wider application scenario. To tackle with these issues, here ProBio will introduce a newly upgraded single B cell platform, featured with capability of screening for both IgG and VHH antibody, and HTP cell-to-antibody conversion system without sequencing or gene synthesis.

Topic Abstract

  • Introduction of technology background for single B cell screening approach
  • Bottlenecks of current single B cell approach, and our solutions
  • Case study of antibody discovery by comparison between single B cell vs. hybridoma and phage library approach
